Unfortunately, racism is normal for human beings. It falls as a sub-class under the greater issue of prejudice. For “Mankind”, prejudice is as old as time. We are hard wired to be fearful of things we are not familiar with and only after we understand that something will not harm us is when we begin to be curious about it. Once we get a grip of what we don’t know, then we decide if it is for us, or not. This is part of our human prejudice. We group with people we think are "like us", as our ego tries to make us believe others are beneath us.
Racism itself is relatively new in respect to human history. Although it seems benign when no one gets hurt physically or emotionally, it’s something that we have tried to suppress, and often tried to avoid thinking about, due to the abhorrent events of recent human history. Fortunately, with each new generation there is an increased, yet varying degree of tolerance amongst people. A lot of times, rather than being expunged from our core beliefs, it is just being hidden away and surpressed, as we try to move our society forward to a more tolerant place.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that our values allow us to be free of racist tendencies. Some of the things we continue to do remind us that we are continuing to evolve as a human race, and often we will revert back to our primitive way of avoiding perceived potential threats.
To help insensitively illustrate how far we have come as a society and how far we still need to go to understand these social issues, we present to you, CARLLRAC.com’s short collection of, Signs that prove you may be racist.
