Gregory Gooseman came to America for close to a decade, starting in 1921, a year after prohibition. He wanted to work for the Sears Roebuck corporation and earn enough to buy the company. But he hated traveling the country by train. He once had an unpleasant experience, when he stuck his head out a cabin window and lost his wooden teeth. Instead, he enjoyed traveling by mule which was no longer common or practical in the United States at the time. After a short time in America, Gregory came to the realization, that purchasing the Sears Roebuck corpration may have been a little bit more expensive than he planned on teh boat over to America.
When landing in America, Gregory moved to Boston. There he kept bar at a local underground speak easy. It was here where he met influencial Irish American polititions that taught him the way of success in America. Bootleg, whiskey. So, he started bootlegging alcohol from Saskatchewan, Canada down to Illinois. This allowed him to become an entrepreneur, and still travel long distances by mule. He became so successful, making so much money in such a short time, that he was able to afford a pack of dogs to pull a dog sled, with his mule on it.
Making money in those days was somewhat slower than it is now with the instant communication, the internet and supply chain systems in place. People had to set up manufacturing processes and for a single immigrant and his mule, it should have taken years to create the wealth, but he had made it in the first few years of his operation. He made so much money in such a short span of time that the Mob suspected that he was in cahoots with the government. The same government that outlawed liquor to begin with. They requested his presence at a “Tommy Gun aficionado convention”. They questioned and grilled him in every which way suspecting this man had an unfair alliance and advantage over these highly organized and respected mobsters, but managed to find nothing wrong with his business, asking him how he managed to make so much money and be so successful.
Gregory said, “you and your goons are into so many different things. Gambling, Women, booze and buying off politicians. I stayed focused on one goal. You’re running hooch with the use of trucks that can only travel by road, and get stopped by the feds. You dig tunnels which use up construction materials, take months to build, and you only like to get Polish people to do the work. There are only so many Polish people in the Midwest. You may know how to get away with it. You might know the right officials to bribe, or the easiest routes to take, the right amount of bottles to put in a crate and how to nicely put hay in them for packaging. I just do one simple task. I pull my dog sled loaded with my product, my mule, and I focus on getting the job done.”
Gregory Gooseman wanted to create wealth, so he could send money to his family back in the old country. He maintained that route from Moose Jaw to Wetland Illinois for almost 10 years during the prohibition period. During that whole time, he never said to himself , "building wealth was impossible". When you say “it's impossible ”, you are suggesting to yourself that you don’t want it. Consciously you are creating a desire that you want something, yet subconsciously, you are saying, you don’t. This creates conflict in your mind, reducing the chances of it happening. Your mind's focus is not fixated on one goal. Not focused to proceed in one direction. It is like you want to go on a weekend road trip. You want get there as soon as possible, but before you leave you decide you need to get gas. Then snacks. Then supplies. By the time you get to your destination, it may be too late, if you get there at all.
After prohibition had ended, leading into a poor economy, Gregory left america with multiple suitcases full of money, and maple syrup. He thought his dream of owning the Sears Roebuck corporation was dead...and it was. But, He went home and created his own retail catalogue with the money he earned from smuggling alcohol around North America. That catalogue would eventually become one of the worlds largest retail and pin up magazines. The European Smut Retail Guide.
Be like Gregory Gooseman. Stay focused.
